Parivahan Know Your Vehicle Details: Online RC Verification by Vehicle Number
How to use Parivahan Sewa to inspect any vehicleβs registration status, fitness, insurance validity, BS emission standards, and road tax records before buying a used vehicle.
The second-hand vehicle market in India carries serious risks: undisclosed hypothecation loans, altered odometer readings, expired fitness certificates, unpaid traffic e-challans, and even stolen vehicles with forged physical smart cards.
The Parivahan "Know Your Vehicle Details" database provides unalterable government data directly from the Vahan 4.0 national ledger, giving second-hand buyers total transparency before paying any token advance.
2. How to Check Vehicle Details on Parivahan Sewa
Follow these steps on your computer or mobile browser:
1
Open Parivahan Sewa Citizen Portal
Visit parivahan.gov.in and click on the "Informational Services" tab, then select "Know Your Vehicle Details".
2
Citizen Sign-In with Mobile Number
Log in using your registered mobile number and password/OTP. If visiting for the first time, register with your mobile and email.
3
Enter Vehicle Number & Security Captcha
Type the full registration mark of the vehicle (e.g., KA01MJ5678) and submit the captcha code.
4
Review Official Vehicle Record
The portal displays the verified Vahan record, including registering RTO authority, vehicle model, fuel type, manufacturing date, and document validity dates.
3. Crucial Data Points to Verify on the RC Record
Always audit these key fields against the physical vehicle and seller claims:
Data Point
What to Check For
Red Flag Warning
Owner Name (Masked)
First and last letters match the sellerβs Aadhaar
Seller claims to be first owner but initials do not match
Hypothecation Status
Shows whether a bank loan is currently active
Active loan means seller cannot legally transfer without Form 35 NOC
Fitness / RC Expiry Date
Private vehicles are valid for 15 years from registration
If expired, green tax and mandatory re-inspection are required
Insurance Validity
Shows active comprehensive or third-party policy date
Lapsed insurance means driving is illegal under MV Act Section 196
PUCC Certificate
Displays pollution test validity date
Expired PUCC incurs an instant βΉ10,000 challan
4. Checking for Blacklisted & Stolen Vehicle Flags
If an FIR has been lodged regarding vehicle theft, or if a court/RTO has seized registration due to tax evasion or severe criminal offences, the Vahan record will display a prominent notice:
Never purchase a vehicle flagged with a blacklisted status until the seller gets the RTO objection cleared and receives an official clean status report.
β οΈBeware of Meter Tampering
Cross-check the vehicle manufacture year shown on Parivahan against the seatbelt tag and glass etchings to ensure the seller has not misrepresented the vehicle age.
